The right pair of socks can regulate temperature and moisture. The material that comprises a pair of socks can be the source of sweat and odor. Sweat itself does not smell. Odor is a result of bacteria coming in contact with perspiration. Bacteria on the skin metabolize certain components of sweat. It is this metabolic process that releases odor.

Merino wool is excellent at managing water vapor, allowing the material to wick moisture from the skin. They are able to keep feet cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Silk has the same moisture wicking and temperature regulating properties as Merino wool. Socks made of 100% silk can be expensive. Socks with a blend of materials that include silk could be an option as well.

A pair of Merino wool socks over a pair of silk socks can be an optimal combination for winter activities such a s skiing.

Cotton is a natural material, but it effectively absorbs and retains moisture and sweat. Contrary to popular belief, cotton is not an ideal material for socks especially for athletic activities.
